POLICE COURTS.
ADELAIDE: Saturday, August. 4.

Smith.)
Patrick Egan was charged with being an idle
and disorderly person. He asked the. Court to
live him an opportunity to leave the colony, and
\v:t-- cranted until Tuesday next in v.-liich to make
tiie necessary arrangements for leaving.
William Henry Oxer was charged on the infor
mation of John Willis, attorney in South Austra
lia for Dalgety & Co., Limited, with having whilst
being in his employ, on July 19 received and taken
into his possession for and on account of his mas
ter £22 3s. 4d., and with having feloniously em
bezzled the same. Mr. E. E. Cieland prosecuted.
John Willis, attorney in South Australia for Dal
gety & Co., Limited, said defendaat was engaged
in February. 1897, as accountant and cashier, and
was so employed on July 19 last. He told Oxer
that there was a deficiency in his cash, and asked
if he had anything to say, to which he replied -
'Nothing, I have been a fool. I took it.' He
was suspended. Saw him subsequently and handed
him list produced. Defendant said 'This is the
correct statement of my deficiencies.' It was the
duty of accused to pay the money be received into
the Bank. A lady clerk said that she remembered
having received £2 3s. 11d. from Mr. Malpas on
July 19. and handed it over to the defendant. W.
Alexander Allan said he had examined the defen
dant's books. There was no entry of the receipt
of £23s. 11d. from Malpas on July 10. There was
a deficiency of £415 approximately in the general
balance. Oxer, who reserved his defence, was com
mitted for trial. Bail was allowed in two sure
ties of £30 each and himself in a like amount.
