EARLY-CLOSING IN WESTERN
AUSTRALIA.
A GRIEVANCE ALREADY.
PERTH. January 11.
me cany-closing Act. wmen came into
force on January 1, appears to be wel
comed by -large shopkeeper*, but in rela
tion to tobacconists and certain other busi
less people tne .-let contains amuiguity. .&
deputation representing the Karly-closing
Association waited to-day on the Resident
Magistrate atFrtmantleto ask that proceed
ings should be taken under the Act against
tobacconist* who sell other lines than ordi
nary smoker*' requisites, and yet remain
open after the ordinary houre, claiming ex
emption as tobacconists. The Resident
Magistrate, in reply, expressed the opinion
that although tobacconist* selling fancy
goods. &c., would have to conform with
the Act in regard to early -closing, they
might keep open if they did not sell other
than smoker* requisites after hours. The
Association is deterring further action un
til a legal opinion has been obtained on
these and other points.
