A CIRCUS SENSATION.
AN ELEPHANT MAKES TROUBLE.
There was a sensation at Wirth's Circus
early on Friday afternoon (says the "Sydney
Morning Herald"), when the officials
report, Cardy, the youngest of the elephant
herd took it into his head to get
even with some of his menagerie asso-
ciates. During the temporary absence of
the keeper on watch be snapped his chain
and charged the Indian cattle and water

the ground, when one of the buffaloes gallantly
came to her rescue, his long powerful
horns recalling to Cardy's mind pain

annoyed at being disturbed by the squabble
that was going on. Jack found himself
being pushed against the big property by
'Caray' head. Luckily for him the van
moved out of position, and he was thus
saved some broken ribs. Being, however,
at the end of his tether he could not re-
taliate in his" favorite way-by-biting
until finally the rope broke, and then he
went for the elephant open-mouthed A
camel's open mouth is one of the most
ferocious-looking things in the animal
world!, and Cardy, beat a hasty retreat.
It would only have been courting certain
fnju"ry~ftF"any of the other "attendants"
to interfere, but when the keeper turned
up Cardy quietly allowed himself to be
chained up, the damage for which he was
a Responsible consisting fortunately only of
some broken and displaced posts.
