SHE WÁM$;A PENSION
AN OLD WOMAN'S CLAIM.
Hobart, April 16.
; A case possessing extraordinary features
came before the police magistrate in the
City Court to-day, when an old, attenuated
woman, Mary Ann Roberts-, applied for a
separation ' from her husband William
Roberts; She said she, had been living
apart from her husband for 42 years, and
during that extended period had" received
nothing from him, and she wanted nothing
but legal release, the object being to obtain
an old-age pension. ' ?? Mr.
J. O'Brien, addressing the court,.
said the-woman had supported herself all
the time, and now in her declining days
(she was over 70 years of age she wanted
to avail herself of the pension which was
provided for such cases. It I was pointed
out that a clause in the Act prevented
the granting of such an order with the
object mentioned, and the police magistrate
said the old-age pension, was instituted for
the purpose of assisting those who had no
means in their old; age. t The applicant's
course was to proceed against her husband
"and make him contribute towards her support.
To grant a r separation would- be
against the intention of the "Old Age Pensions
Act, and the application was refused.
