MELBOURNE, Thurs.
Ian Johnson, the 35-year
old Victorian off-break bow
ler, will captain Australia's
team in the frst Test match
against England, which will
start in Brisbane tomorrow
week.
His appointment was con
firmed today by the secretary
of the Board of Control (Mr.
Jack Ledward) after a tele
graphic vote had been taken
among the 13 members of
the board.
* In the picturegram,
Johnson is shown with his
seven-year-old son, Robert,
reading congratulatory tele
grams at their home in
Melbourne.
Johnson was one of the
favoured candidates for the
captaincy of the Test team,
but there is surprise in some
quarters that the N.S.W.
left-hand opening batsman.
Arthur Morris, has been
passed over.
Morris was vice-captain.
under Lindsay Hassett, of
the Australian team in Eng
land last year and it was
thought that he was being
groomed for the job.
