Plane, Ship
Diverted
To Island
An airliner and an island
shipping vessel were di-
verted to Whitemark,
Flinders Island, on Tues-
day on mercy missions.
THE vessel Shearwater, which
was travelling from White-
mark to Babel Island, was forced
to return to Whitemark with Mrs.
H. Brown, who had been bitten
by a snake.
Mrs. Brown was picked up
when the Shearwater called at
Cape Barren to load mutton-
birders for Babel Island.
The woman was taken to the
Flinders Island bush nursing
hospital, where her condition last
night was reported to be "fairly
comfortable."
It was reported from Flinders
Island last night that snakes
were plentiful on Big Dog and
Little Green islands.
A Trans-Australia Airlines
plane was diverted to the Pat's
River aerodrome, near White-
mark, on Tuesday to enable Mr.
U. Mansell to be taken to Laun-
ceston for an operation.
The diversion of the plane
enabled an island resident,
Mrs. Bonner, to connect with
a ship sailing for New Zea-
land.
Mrs. Bonner was scheduled to
leave from Sydney to-day, but
prior booking had prevented her
leaving the island in time to
make the connection.
The Shearwater is expected to
sail from Lady Barron to-day
for Babel Island.
