LIGHTNING!- CAUSES
MEES.
THREE OUTBREAKS IN SYDNEY.
Sydney, May 6.
The lightning last night was particularly
severe at Marrickville, for in that district
no fewer than three outbreaks of fire were
caused. AlVr a series of lightning flashes
a large wood and iron workroom connected
with the rope works of Mr. Stephen
Ungar, situated at Sydenham-road, burst
into flame. The brigades turned out and
fought the flames through the blinding
storm. The fire was soon overcome; , but
not before the building and a quantity of
flax which it contained had been severely
damaged.
Hardly had the Marrickville brigade returned
to their station when they were
called out again, this time to the saddlery
establishment of Mr. C. Wareham, in Marrickville-road.
The lightning had come
in contact with one of the wires support-
ing the electric tram trolly wire, and
started a fire. There was, however, very
little for the firemen to do. A third
outbreak, again in Marrickville-road, occurred
about an hour afterwards. the fire
was started similarly to the previous one,
by lightning striking an electric wire. The
wire was attached to the office and dwell-
ing of Mr. E. E. Pugh, estate agent. At the
first shock about? ft. square of plaster
fell from the ceiling in the front room. The
fire was quickly extinguished, but the contents
of the room were damaged by water.
