WITH OR WITHOUT THE
SLEEVES IN IT
A COSY PULL-OVER FOR A MAN
FUR those who wish to make something for their husbands, brothers, or boy friends this
F winter, and at the same time are desirous of entering::"The Examiner" Knitting Compe
tition, the instructions given on this page for a man's pullover with or without sleeves, will be
found very useful. There is a class for a man's juniper with sleeves, and another one for a
man's jumper without sleeves.
MATERIALS
Paton's Super Scotch Fingering Wool,
4-ply. Persian brown (shade 1291), 11
oz. or 7oz. "Beehive" knitting
Hecdles-1 pair each Nos. 10 and 13.
One set of four No. 13, with points at
both ends.
MEASUREMENTS
Length from top of shoulder, 20',iin.
Width all round at under-arm, 38in.
TENSION
To get these measurements it is ab
solutely necessary to work at a ten
,ion to produce seven stitches to the
inch.
THE FRONT. - Using the No. 13
needles, cast on 132 stitches.
First row-K. 2, a P. 1, K. 1, repeat
from C to the end of the row.
Repeat this row for three inches, in
ccausing once at the end of the last
rowc.
using the No. 10 needles, proceed as
ololows:
First row-* K. 7, (P. 1, K. 1) three
tows, P. 1, repeat from a to the last 7
stitches, K. 7.
Second row-K. 1, P. 0, o K. 7. P. 7,
repeat from * to the last 14 stitches,
K 7. P. 6, K. 1.
Repent the first and second rows 48

tern, cast off 8 stitches at the begin
ibu of the next 2 rows.
Decrease once at each end of every
ron until 109 stitches remain. Pro
ceed as follows:
F;rst row-K. 1, K. 2 tog., work 51
stitches in pattern, K. 2 tog., work 50
stitches in pattern, K. 2 tog., K. 1.
Second row-K. 1, K. 2 tog., work 50
stitches in pattern, turn.
Work on these 52 stitches as fol
First row-Work in pattern to the
last 2 stitches, K. 2 tog. Continue in
pattern, decreasing once at the neck
edge in every 4th row, while at the
same time decreasing once at the arm
liole edge in every row six times.
Continue in pattern, decreasing once
at the neck edge in every 4th row
until 30 stitches remain.
Work 2 rows without shaping.
Shape for the shoulders as follows:
First row-Work in pattern to the
la2t 3 stitches, turn.
2nd and alternate rows - Work in
pattern to the end of the row.
Third row-K. 1, K. 2 tog. work in
paitern to the last 16 stitches, turn.
Fifth row-Work in pattern to the
lAst 24 dtitches. turn.
Sixth row-York in pattern to the
end of the row.
Cast off.
Join in the wool at the neck edge.
Work on the remaining stitches to
correspond.
THE BACK-Work exactly as given
for the front until there are 109
stitches on the needle.
Continue in pattern, decreasing once
at each end of the needle in every
row, until 93 stitches remain.
Work without shaping until the arm
hole measures the same as the front
arm-hole.
Shape for the shoulders as follows:
First and second rows-Work in pat
tern to the last 8 stitches, turn.
Third and fourth rows-Work in pat
tern to the lazt 16 stitches, turn.
Fifth and sixth rows-Work in pat
tern to the last 24 stitches, turn.
Seventh and eighth rows. - Work in
pattern to the last 30 stitches, turn.
Ninth row-Work in pattern to the
end of the row.
Cast off.
THE SLEEVES-Using the No. 13
needles, cast on 62 stitches.
First row-K. 2. " P. 1, K. 1, repeat
from 4 to the end of the row.
Repeat this row for 3 inches, increas
ing once at the end of the last row.
Using the No. 10 needles. work in
pattern, as given for the back. increas
ing once at each end of the needle in
every eighth row until there are 101
stitches on the needle. Continue with
out shaping until the work measures
196 inches from the commencement.
Cast off two stitches at the beginning
of every row until 39 stitches remain.
Cast off.
Work another sleeves in the same
manner.
TO MAKE UP THE PULLOVER. -
With a slightly damp cloth and warm
iron, press lightly. Sew up side,
shoulder, and sleeve seams. Sew in
the sleeves, placing seam to seam.
THE NECK BAND-Using the four
No. 13 needles, with the right side of
the work facing, knit up 72 stitches
along each side of the front, and 55
stitches across the back of the neck.
First round-(K. 1, P. 1) 35 times,
(K. 2 tog.) twice, (P. 1, K. 1) 62 times,
P. 1.
Second round-(K. 1, P. 1) 34 times.
K. 1 (P. 2 tog.A twice, (K. 1, P. 1) 62
times.
Third round-K. 1. P. 1) 34 times (K
2 tog.) twice (P. 1, K. 1) G1 times. P.1.
Fourth round-(K. 1, P. 1) 33 times,
K. 1 (P. 2 tog.) twice, (K. 1, P. 1) 01
times.
Continue it this manner, decreasing
once at each side of the centre front
in every round until 12 rounds have
been worked. Cast off.
THE ARM BANDS-Using the four
No. 13 needles, knit . up 160 stitches
round the arm-hole.
Work 10 rounds in rib of K. 1, P. 1.
Cast off
Work another arm-band in the
same manner.
