OBITUARY
DR. H. G. HAINES
The death occurred at Longford yes
terday morning of Dr. Hugh Gough
Haines, a resident of the Longford dis
trict for many years.
Dr. Haines, who was aged 83 years,
was born at Mangalore (India), and
was the son of the late Col. G. Haines.
He was educated at Marlborougb, Eng
land, and later at the Edinburgh Uni
versity, where he studied for the medi
cal profession, and won the gold medal
for chemistry. He came out from
England about 50 years ago and settled
at Longford. He acquired a large
practice, which in 1929 he gave up. His
health has gradually declined in late
years, and his death was not unex
pected.
Dr. Haines had been a great athlete.,
He played rugby football at the uni
versity at Edinburgh, was a good boxer,
and wrestler in his younger days, and
a fine fisherman. After settling in
Tasmania, golf was his chief recrea
tion. A vice-president of practically
every sporting body at Longford, he
was particularly generous in giving
these bodies voluntary assistance. He
married Miss Alice Parker, a daughter
of the late Mr. Erskine Parker, of the
Hopthorp estate, in Longford district.
Mrs. Haines died about 16 years ago.
Dr. Haines' twin brother, Major Greg
ory Haines, England, has been in the
habit of visiting his brother every
summer in recent years. He is resid
ing at Longford at present. The fun
eral is to be private.
MRS. A. R. PARKES
After having been in Indifferent
health for some years, Mrs. Fanny,
Rachael Parkes, wife of Mr. A. R.
Parkes, passed away :.t a private hos
pital in Launceston yesterday at the
age of 41 years.
The late Mrs. Parkes was born in
Hobart, and was the daughter of Mr,
and Mrs. O. D. Lewis. Mr. Lewis being
of the Marine Department there. Miss
Lewis worked in the Lands Depart
ment at Hobart for some years, and
during the war did V.A.D. work in Ho
bart. She was married to Mr. Parkes,
18 years ago, and came with her hus
band to Launceston three or four years
ago when Mr. Parkes was appointed
Registrar of Births, Deaths, and Mar
riages here.
M'rs. Parkes was well known in
Launceston and Hobart, particularly in
Iho capital.
Mrs. Parkes leaves a daughter, Mary.
and three sons, Derwent. Cliff, and
John,
