MOTORING.
(By "Spark).
FIXTURES.
Dec 16--Run to "'Palmerston," Cressy.
Tasmania as the garden state of the
Commonwealth is naturally a great tour-
ist resort in the summer months, and
as such it should be our duty to cater
for visitors to our utmost. In so doing
it is wise to not only attract fresh tour-
ists, but also to offer sufficient induce-
ment to those who have visited the state
to make a return trip, and still further
enjoy its numerous pleasures and beau-
tiful scenery. Evidently this is not the
desire of the present Government. The
writer read in yesterday's 'Examiner"
that the Government proposes to levy a
tax on visiting motorists. In Victoria,
and, I believe, the same conditions pre-
vail in other parts of the Common-
wealth, motorists from other states,
beyond being licensed to drive and hav-
ing their cars registered in their home
state, are put to no further inconvenience
or expense. This is not the case in our
own state, where a visiting motorist not
only has to pay for a driver's license, but
also a car registration fee. Now, on
top of this, the Government proposes to
make them pay one-quarter the annual
tax. Surely Ministers do not realise
what will result, or is it a sudden inspira-
tion launched without calm and needful
consideration? Undoubtedly the effect
will be to not only hinder the tourist
traffie, but cast to the wind all the
reciprocation of courtesy and kindness
which exists between the various inter-
state motoring bodies and our own. Af-
ter all, the amount that will result if the
tax is passed will be insignificant, com-
pared with the work, hindrance, and un-
pleasantness that will be caused. I
believe the RAC, and other organisa- ???
tion are interesting themselves in the
matter, and it is to be hoped for the
sake of the state Ministers will see the
wisdom of abandoning the proposal.
Next Saturday Mr. and Mrs. S. Nichols,
of 'Palmerston," Cressy are holding a
garden fete in aid of the Y.M.C.A. funds,
and have asked members of the T.A.C.
to assist by being present. Tennis courts
will be available, and among numerous
attractions is an auction of gifts and
country produce. During the afternoon
music will help to enliven the proceed-
ings. Members are requested to roll up
and bring a full car. Those making the
trip can feel assured of a pleasant out-
ing.
