FEDERAL MATTERS
PRIME MINISTER'S REMARKS.
MELBOURNE, Monday.
The Prime Minister commented to-day
on the speech of Lord Dudley at Kidder
minster. Mr. Fisher referred to the utter
ance as a very thoughtful speech. At the
same time he suggested that a little un
due prominence had been given to what
might be termed the alarmist aspect of the
matter. As far as Australia was concerned
he' did not know of the approach of Any
critical stage in Imperial history. He
understood that the naval officers who
had been examining the various sites sug
gested for a naval college had made a final
recommendation to the Minister, and that
the college would be established at
Buraneer Bay. Port Hacking. Tee ma
chinery of the small arms factory atLith
gow had been installed, but trouble had
arisen in connection with some of the
engines manufactured at the engineeruog
shops at Fitzroy Dock, Sydney. The
engine for' the generation of power had
failed to work, and the commencement of
operations had been delayed. Copies of
the recommendations of the War Railway
Council relating' to the arrangements for
military control of the state railways so
far as might be necessary in time of war
were forwarded to the State Governors
by the Defence Pepartment some months
ago. Replies had been received from the
states agreeing to the recommendations.
