wuviTWnnTH'fi RDRINH APPARATUS.
A correspondent of the London Mining Journal, of Dec.
30th (Mr John Mullins, of Battersea), thus describes Went
worth's wonderful boriasr apparatus for miners : —
T tinvA nnt -»Pti in vnnr valuable journal arir notice of a miner's
boring apparatus for excavating holes for blasting rocks, &a , lately
invented and patented, a description of which I cannot but think
wonld deeply Interest many of your readers. The origin of the in
vention I understand to have been this :— Daniel Watney, Esq., of
Wandsworth, being the proprietor of certain iron ore ai-d other
mines in South Wales, on a recent visit wa» much struck with the
great length of time and expenditure of labour required in boring
boles for blasting the rock ; and on returning to town, icquested Mr
John Wcntwortb, of the firm of Wen-worth and Sons, engineers, of
Wandsworth, to direct his attention to the subject, with the object of
devising some plan for the laving both of time and labour. The
result was the invention of the apparatus above alluded to, wbicb, it
appears, is very compact, and occupies very little space ; it was
taken down to Wales, and tho most able band at boring (as bitberto
practised) was selected from the mir.cn, and was desired to select
nil own spot, and to work (in bis own way) in what direction he
pleased. He chose the. horizontal direction, as most easily worked.
The apparatus was then fixed, and its work commenced at tbe same
time, but before the miner bad completed the proper leng'.b of his
bore, tbe apparatus bad drilled no less than six holes in the bard
rock, all of the proper length, and In different directions : horizontal,
at an elevated angle above, and at a depressed angle below, also
right and left and directly overhead, and all without moving the ap
paratus. In fact, tbe apparatus, when once fixed, I understand, will
work in every possible direction, and is, therefore, exceedingly
valuable to tbo mine-owner. I tbink your mining fiieudi will be
glad to leo a detciiption of the apparatus in jour journal.
