NO CORROBOREE
A letter has been received by
the North Australian Workers'
Union from Australia's finest
amateur theatre the famous
New Theatre of Sydney. ,
j. The letter says that leaflets
on the exiling of Fred Waters
and the refusal by aboriginals
to put on a corroboree were
distributed at recent Sydney
performances of the ballet
"Corroboree." '
The leaflet under the head-
ing of "Corroboree"-"No Cor-
roboree" reminded ballet lovers
that the proud people who
danced their Corroborees in
the freedom of their tribal life
had changed.
"When the white man came
to Australia there were half a
million aborigines . . Unfor-
tunately the white people re-
garded them as a menace to
their plans for Australia.
Thousands were shot and pois-
oned. Thousands caught the
white man's diseases but were
denied the white man's reme-
dies. Today only 50,000 are
left."
After outlining the Waters
case the leaflet continued:
"New Theatre feels that, no
one who tonight has seen the
great cultural debt we owe to
the original Australians can
ignore these things. The integ-
ral idea of human rights,
which is the very corner stone
of all culture, demands that
we do something more than
admire aborigines from the
safe distance of the Tivoli
auditorium. ~
"We urge you to write to the
Minister for the Interior, Mr.
Anthony, protesting against
this latest violation of human
rights."
