SIGNALS FOR STEAMERS.
On nnd after the 1st Jannary, 18511, tho following
signals for steamers will bo made at the Pilot, Port, and
West-terrace Signal Stations : — ?
No. 1. Steamer in sleht— A ball over a rod oendant
with white ball in centre.
No. 2. Steamer from foreign ports or the neighbour
ing colonies— A ball over the tricolour flag.
No. 3. Steamer from Melbourne with the Englishman
—k ball over the chequered flog.
No. 4 Coasting steamers from the sottth— A ball over
blue and yellow pendant on the south yardorm.
Nj. 5. Coasting steamers from tho hobth— A ball over
a blue and yellow pendant at the wobtii yardarm.
As the smoke of a steamer can be discerned before it
is possible to determine the rig of the vessel, No. 1
Mgnal will be kept flying until the vessel can be clearly
distinguished.
Should the Peninsular and Oriental or the G.S.S.S.
Companies resume their contracts to this port direct, the
flags of the respective Companies will be used on the
arrival of their vessels. '
Steamers having an English mail on board wiil have
the cheqnered flag flying at the fore.
Steamers from colonial ports will have the enilgn
flying at the main.
Steamers coastwiso will have the ensign flying at the
mizen or from an ensign-staff.
