CHURCHILL IN
ABBEY APPEAL
London, Friday .-The Prime Minister?
(Mr. Churchill) launched an appeal today;
for £1 million from Britain and the Com-*
monwealth to preserve and endow West-
minster Äbbey, scene of this year's coro-
nation. ,
The first donation to the
lund came from the Queen.
Other members ol' the Royal
Family-the Duke of Edin-
burgh, the Queen Mother,
Queen Mary, Princess' Mar-
garet, Prince Charles and
Princess Anne, and the
-Duchess of Kent, all made
contribution.
Mr. Churchill, in his first
public engagement since his
return yesterday from: Ame-
rica, dropped £1. into . the
tray at the official opening
of the historic Jerusalem
chamber adjoining the
Abbey. But his note will
not be üeed as part of the
fund. The dean (Dr. Alan
C. Don) said- it would be
framed and kept among thp
Abbey's treasures.
. Mr. Churchill said: ""The
purpose of this appeal is to
get £1 million from a mil
lion people to save West-
minster Abbey from' ruin and
decay:"
He ¡ appealed to people
throughout Britain and thp
Commonwealth and thc
English-speaking world to
send - contributions ol' £1
each to the dean.
