HEAVY TOLL
IN N.S.W.
BUSH FIRE
SYDNEY, Mon.-More than
20,000 acres of valuable sheep
pastures and wheat and oat
crops have been destroyed by a
bushfire that is still raging in the
Collie district, near Gilgandra,
in north-western New South
Wales.
Today the fire was three miles
wide on its northern side.
Fifty men were felling smould
ering trees to keep them from
falling on dry vegetation and
spreading the fire.
The Collie postmaster (Mr.
Brophy) said: "The fire is dan
gerous on the north side, but a
strong westerly wind is keeping
it away from farms and home
steads.
"If the wind swung around to
the south anything could
happen."
