Appeal By
O'Meally
Dismissed
MELBOURNE, Tues.--The
State Full Court today unani
mously dismissed the appeal of
William John O'Meally (28),
labourer, against his conviction
and sentence of death in the Cri
minal Court on May 23 on a
charge of having murdered Con
stable George Howell at Caul
field on January 30.
Constable Howell was fatally
wounded while chasing a man he
had found tampering with cars
parked outside a Caulfield pic
ture theatre.
The Full Court rejected all the
grounds of the appeal.
O'Meally said from the dock:
"The matter will be taken fur
ther.'
In a clear voice he added:
"Your Honours, I am innocent.
"I still maintain that a miscar
riage of justice has been per
formed."
O'Meally is expected to appeal
to the High Court.
