Early Wins
Likely
Slipro and Bob's Son, Wood
worth-trained pacers who were
- recently brought to this State
from Adelaide, both scored im
pressively at the trials last
night. They can be regarded
as early winners.
Slipro's win was the easiest of
t the night. Alan Woodworth
shot the horse away from the
I bunch leaving the back straight
in the last lap and Slipro had a
i margin of about 15 yards from
Super Charm when the post
was reached. The last mile
t was paced at a 2.121 rate.
- Similar times of 3.24 for the
1- miles and 2.12* for the last
1 mile were recorded by Bob's
r Son in the sixth heat. At his
only start in this State, on
March 29, Bob's Son choked
down and collapsed on the
track. He has taken no harm
from that mishap.
Memorial
Race
Proposed
A suggestion that the name of
the late Mr. James Brennan
should be perpetuated in all
future inter-Dominion cham
pionship programmes will prob
ably be strongly supported by
_ many followers of trotting in
this State.
The proposal is Mgade by
"Tuxedo" in a recent issue of
I the "Australian Trotting Re
cord." He claims that Mr.
Brennan, a former president of
the W.A. Trotting Association
was the man who first thought
of bringing together in one
carnival all the best pacers in
Australia and New Zealand.
"When the late Jim Brennan
first got the idea he knew
he had something that
would lift trotting out of
the rut it had been in for
many years," he writes. "He
publicly stated that it would
become the Melbourne Cup of
trotting, and his dream long ago
came true.
"I would like to see the con
solation race ilamed after him
so that the near-champions
could compete for the James
Brennan Memorial."
Mr. Brennan, in the early days
of the sport in this State, owned
and raced many trotters, in
cluding the speedy Kola Girl.
He was president in 1918-19
and from 1923 to 1929.
At one time the new course,
now, of course, known as
Gloucester Park, was named
Brennan Park. A cup race was
also named after him.-"Lex
ington."
