Three Missing After
Floods End Drought
BRISBANE, Mon.-Mr. R. D. McDowell, a former
mayor of Maryborough, his young daughter Janice
and a mailman are missing in the floods which
occurred after the drought over one-tenth of
Queensland was broken today.
The mailman, whose name is
not known, has been missing
since 6.30 a.m. today.
Rivers and streams from Nam
bour in the south to Rockhamp
ton in Central Queensland are
now running bankers, flooding
low-lying areas and disrupting
road and rail traffic.
Maryborough has had more
than 18in. of rain in three days
and more rain is likely tomor
row. Today 410 points fell in
three hours after a cloudburst.
Mr. McDowell is the pump at
tendant at Teddington Weir, on
the Mary River, which is in
heavy flood.
Police and council workers
have organised a search.
All roads to Maryborough are
cut off and water is racing
through the city's main streets.
