MAN DROWNED AND
MANY RESCUED
One man was drowned cit Scarborough yesterday
afternoon and in two mass rescues 12 people were
assisted to the beach.
At about 5 o'clock life-savers
advised a large crowd not to
enter the' water again.
The drowned man was Renzo
Antonio Decampo (21), single,
of Aberdeen-street, Perth.
He was one of six bathers who
were involved in the first mass
rescue shortly after noon.
They were standing on a shal
low bank when a large wave
washed them into a channel
and caught them in a strong
current which quickly carried
them out of their depth and
towards a reef.
Three life-svers-Rodney
Baker, Geoffrey Hodglinson
and Andy Carlin--saw the
bathers in difficulties and, al
though they were not on duty,
quickly went to their assistance.
Carlin, with a belt, brought in
two people and the other men
assisted others to the shore.
Then Baker noticed a man
floating and when he swam out
to investigate he found the un
conscious body of Decampo.
Resuscitation efforts by the
life-savers, a doctor and a
driver of the St. John ambul
ance were unsuccessful and
Decampo was dead on arrival
at the Royal Perth Hospital.
Others Saved
The second mass rescue oc
curred about 4.30 p.m.
Six mnore bathers got into
similar difficulties at the same
position and two more life
savers, Geoffrey White and Ken
Sawyer, were forced to don
belts and assist them to the
shore.
During the afternoon the life
savers, who were not rostered
for patrol duty, warned bath
ers many times to keep away
from the channel and after the
first rescue a man was posted
there with a flag.
Nine rescues were effected by
life-savers at other metropoli
tan beaches.
At North Cottesloe two bath
ers were rescued and removed
to the Fremantle Hospital. for
treatment. They were Rena
Penalla (18), a nurse at the
Claremont Mental Hospital,
and Peter Ford (21), of Mur
ray-street, Perth.
At City Beach six people got
into difficulties after being
caught in a current near the
Groyne. An elderly man was
rescued at Cottesloe.
