Walkerville Guides
Win Thrift Cup
By Tinning the De Crespigny
Cup. presented this year for thrift,
Guides of the Walkerville division
have proved themselves the best
scavengers in an association which
has already made a name for itself
for its war on waste.
Eighteen of them set out early
on Saturday morning, and by late
afternoon had to tbeir credit ap
proximately eight truckloads of
waste, comprising, among a pro
digious amount of waste paper, 31
bags of bottles, a wooden leg, a dog
kennel, and thousands of stamps.
Guides pressed into service a
horse and cart, a 15-cwt. gas pro
ducer truck, hand carts and ex
press waggons, and when these
were full to overflowing they
hoisted bundles on their shoulders
and set out for the garden of St.
Helens, which Mrs. Roy Bullock
had put at the disposal of the four
northern metropolitan divisions —
Walkerville. Prospect. North Ade
laide, and Adelaide, which com
peted for the cup.
Mothers of the winning division
members did a splendid job in
helping to sort the spoils as they
arrived, and also lent a hand with
divisions which had fewer Guides I
to help them. It was only after
the judges had spent a difficult
time in deciding the points that
Lady de Crespigny presented the
cup to Walkerville. A competition
for the most original article made
from scraps was held, and the sale
of these raised £8 5/.
