High Caste Outstanding Three-year-old Of Season
HALIFAX
MAY BE BEST
YOUNGSTER
Maikai Unlucky
By GAMBIER
The Victorian spring rac- <*>
ing campaign, which is
drawing to a close, has re- <*>
vealed that, in the tempor-
ary absence of Ajax, High
Caste is the best weight
for-age horse in Australia,
that there is no dearth of
two-year-olds, and that
there are good class handi
cap performers racing.
Because of the brilliance and sta
mina demonstrated by High Caste at
?weight-for-age after his defeat by
Reading in the Derbys at Randwick
and Flemington, it is a matter for won
derment how he went under in the
classics. When the big New Zealand
bred' colt was beaten twice over a mile
and a half there was a suspicion that
he was not a true stayer, but his vic
tory over Landlaw and Mosaic in the
fast-run C. B. Fisher Plate on Satur
day dispelled such ideas. When they
meet in the autumn. High Caste may
well turn the tables on Reading.
The other three-year-old colts, in-'
eluding the SJL Derby winner (Lus
son), fell far below the class of High
Caste and Reading.
Although Dreamsbme failed to win
a race in Melbourne, she was far from
disgraced. Her second to Triode in
the Oaks, in which she turned the
tables on Snow White and Riviera, who
had beaten her in the Wakeful
Stakes, established her claim to be
classed as the second best staying filly
in Australia.
Smart Two-Tear-Olds
Several good two-year-olds were
among the winners at the'carnival. The
Maribyrnong Plate was captured by
the Sydney colt Broadcaster, but when
they meet again Halifax, a nice chest
nut colt by Christopher Robin, will
probably defeat the Marconigram colt.
When ?> Broadcaster narrowly beat
Halifax in the Plate, the latter was
rather unlucky in having drawn a berth
wide out from the fiat rails, and he
was seen at his best on Saturday when
he won the Flemington Stakes. Hali
fax gave promise of being the best
two-year-old of the season but. of
course, other promising youngsters,
like Securities. Earl Marshal. Florin.
Goldsmith, and Mormon are likely to
Improve. -
Trueness is the outstanding filly. She
Is far above such two-year-old winners
as Partoer. Pasal and Ten O'clock.
Maikai Unlucky
The Western Australian Maikai was
the unluckiest horse of the carnival,
although he won several thousands of
pounds by running successive seconds
