NEW ZEALAND.
WELLINGTON, September 21.
In the Legislative Council on Friday the
Government were asked if they would remove
the present restrictions upon the importation
of Australian grapes. The Minister
replied that he was informed that the
dangers still existed of vine diseases being
introduced by grapes from the Commonwealth.
It would be far better to remain
secure than to run risks. Moreover, if the
embargo were removed the market would be
supplied with imported grapes at 2d. per lb.,
while the locally-grown would not be sold
under a shilling.
The Ladies' Golf championship was won
by Mrs. Bidwell.
THE SOUTHERN CROSS.
It is thought here that Friday's cable
from San Francisco, announcing "that the
missionary schooner Southern Cross had
been wrecked at Tahiti, may refer to the
Union Company's steamer, Mawhera,
which, under the name of Croix Du And
(Southern Cross), was wrecked recently at
the islands, while chartered by a French
company. There is a new schooner,
Southern Cross. built two years ago. for
the French Protestant Mission, trading between
Marquess and, Paumotu..
