London, September 20.
The steamer Kiama, which is engaged in
the Australian trade, collided with the pier
at Gourock, a town on the Clyde, and so
damaged her bows that she had to return
to Glasgow for repairs.
F. C. V. Lane, the Sydney swimmer, has
performed the feat of swimming 150 yards,
at the Bolton Baths, in 96 sec, which is
the world's record.
A fire which occurred at the Victoria
Docks has destroyed 3,000.000 jarrah
blocks, imported from West Australia for
the purpose of wood-paving the streets of
London.
Viscount Milner has written to Lord
Meath, expressing his sympathy with the
suggestion regarding Empire Day. but
urging that the idea of taking the initiative
in. the matter should be. left to the self
governing colonies.
The scheme for the amalgamation of the
South African and Australasian Cold Storage
Companies has been agreed to.
