Lord Mayor Favors
Removal Of Statue
The Lord Mayor (Mr. Walker)
yesterday spoke in favor of the
proposal to remove the Queen Vic-
toria statue from Victoria square.
"From police reports, It is evi
dent that the statue is a danger
to traffic in its present position,"
nf said. "It creates a bad blind
spot in a busy main thoroughfare,
and I think the lime has arrived
when its removal should be con
sidered. Prom the point ot view
of a central obstacle in Lhe road to
divert the various streams of traf
fic, a smaller mound which did not
rise to a height of more than two
or three feet, and which did not re
strict the visibility of drivers,
would be preferable."
Mr. Walker added that he felt
sure an appropriate position for
the statue could be found elsewhere
in the city. Choice of another site
would, however, require careful
consideration
A. Royal Automobile Association
spokesman said last ni*ht that the
RAA was of opinion that from a
Ipurely practical point of view, the
lremov.il of the statue would con-
Itribute materially to the smooth
land accident-free flow of traffic at
'this locality.
