Germans' Plight Worsens
FAST LOSING
DNIEPER BEND
Continuous Thrusts
By Russians
ENEMY'S LINES IN
DANGER
Australian Associated Press
LONDON, October 26.
Messages from Moscow today state that German
positions everywhere inside the Dnieper bend
are being overrun by the Russians.
Soviet spearheads are continually pushing forward, forcing
the Germans to carry out rapid retreats in all directions.
The enemy's communications, which are heavily choked
with transport, are threatened by Russian thrusts from
the north, east, and west, and the Dnieper bend has be-
come a slaughterhouse for the Germans.
Fierce fighting is continuing for Krivoi Rog, where German
resistance is being steadily worn down. The west flank
of the Russian force in this area has suddenly veered
south-west to threaten the railway to Snamenka. Soviet
troops are only five miles from the line.
The Russians have advanced 11 miles from Melitopol and
west of the railway to the Crimea. The enemy is fiercely
resisting in this area. Soviet troops are in full pursuit
of the Germans streaming back from Dnepropetrovsk
and Dneprodsenhinsk, and Russian bombers early today
began a systematic pounding of the enemy columns.
In both towns the Germans wrought destruction before they
cleared out. When the Russians entered they found fac-
tories, houses and important buildings demolished. Walls
were covered with notices ordering the population to
move westward under pain of death for disobedience.
