Biography Of C. J.
Dennis
To gather information for a bio-
graphy of the late C. J. Dennis,
the Australian poet and author,
Mr. Alex. Chisholm is visiting
South Australia. He is particularly
desirous of hearing from anyone
who can recall anecdotes of Dennis
during his boyhood days at Auburn.
Clare, and Gladstone. Mr. Chis
holm will be at the South Austra
lian Hotel for the next few days.
C. J. Dennis, who in his day was
regarded as Australia's chief
humorist In verse, was born at
Auburn in 1876, and was the son of
James Dennis, a retired master
mariner. He spent most of his
boyhood in the country, coming to
Adelaide as a young man. where
lie was prominent In literary circles,
and was for a time associated with
a humorous weekly, "The Gadfly."
?which he helped to establish. Later
he achieved fame with his volumes
of poems, among which "The Songs
of a Sentimental Bloke," "Back
block Ballads." and "The Glugs of
Gosh," were most widely known.
