40-HOUR WEEK FOR
BUILDERS' LABORERS
Application Refused By
Arbitration Court
MELBOURNE. April 28.
An application by the Builders
Laborers' Federation for a reduc-
tion of hours to 40 a week in the
building trade was refused today
by the FuU Arbitration Court con
sisting of Chief Judge Piper, Judge
OTHara. and Judge Kelly. Members',
of about 13 unions were interested
in the matter. „ ~ ;
In making the application. Mr. [
D Thomson, secretary of the union.;
said that employes were entitled r
to share in the advantages accru-,
ing from the introduction of mod
ern methods in the building trade.
They included cdhcrete mixers,
steam shovels In excavation work,
muted paints. pre-fabrtcation
buildings, as used in houses at
Fisherman's Bend: fibrous plaster
sheets, window and door frames,
and concrete stairways. Suchl
methods meant a reduction Tn
manual labor, and there should be
a corresponding reduction in tbe ;i
working week. . j,
In announcing the decision.
Chief Judge Piper said that the
court did . not wish to bear the
views of representatives opposing .
the application. Reasons for the
court's decision would be given in,
