Kansas City, July 15-Steady recession
of floodwater in the Missouri and Kansas
rivers today brought hope of saving the
water and power supplies.
Firemen and, guards were
búsv all day trying tb con-
quer an oil fire in Kansas
City. Missouri. It was caus-
ed when an oil tank explod-
ed, drifted among several
others, and set. fire to them
one after another.
Once it seemed that the
fire was under control, but
it broke out again.
So far the flood is known
to have caused 17 deaths.
LEVEE WORK
Today the struggle cenr
tred in repairing the . levees
along the rivers. If that can
be done it .will ensure a
continuance of water and
electricity for 140,000 Kansas
City residents.
Drinking water was scarce
theçe yesterday because
some of the pumping stations
had been flooded.
Hundreds of volunteer-*
(using trucks, bulldozers»
steam shovels and bran
bags) have been taken tc
threatened ' points. They
went through a dramatic
battle as' some pressed their
mud-caked r bodies . into
breaches iff the banks until
they could be-replaced with
bags of sand. .
The oil fire, which began
last Friday, .is devastating o
large industrial and busi-
ness district.
