MUNICIPAL CORPORATIONS.
RRTfxHTflN Mnsnw. May 22.
Present— The Mayor (Mr. Joseph Downing),
Councillors Pontifex, Bagshaw, Vincent,
Thomas, and tha Town Clerk (Mr. W.
This waa a epecial meeting to arrange for
meeting jetty bonds for £1,500, and to receive
tenders for putting out the atone.
A paper wan laid on the table showing that
the bonds for £1.500 would tall due on June 1,
and in coni-tquence of tho closing of the
National Bank the only amount available was
£250 deposited in the Savings Bank. The
Clerk stated he bad seen the lender, who
stated that she was willing to renew thb
bonds from £1,250 for two years or three yenrs
if necessary ac 6 per cent., the interest payable
quarterly. Should the Corporation be uuable
to pay off the t'1,250 at the expiry of the two
years the lender agreed to renew whatever
balance might be owing to thr end of the third
year. Councillor Vincent moved, and Conn
cillor BaGSHAW seconded— 'That the offt-r of
£1,250 on Corporation bonds be accepted.'
Councillor Thomas proposed an amendment—
'That toe offer to letiow the loan of £1.230 for
three years from June 1, 18!)3, at (! per cent,
psr annum payable quarterly be necppted, pro
vided liberty be eiven the Corporation to pay
off a sum of not less than £250 at the end of
he first year if found convement, and to pay
Dff the vvh'ile or pert ac the expiry of two
years.' The amendment waa nuc seconded.
Xhu motion was earned.
A cheque was drawn on tb« Savings Bank
for £230 to brt paid into the trust account wich
the National Bunk, and cheques were given to
the Ulerk for £250 and £22 10s., tho former lo
reduoH the bonds and the latter to pay the
quarter's interest due Juno 1. The Clerk was
instructed to get the bonds and coupons
printed.
The Finance Committee reported :— Pav-
znents — Labour, £4 4s ; stone, £41 ; expenses
inspection of roads. £1 3^ tiii ; total. £1!) 7s. 6rl
The papers sent in by the National Bank
were duly signed and forwarded.
lour tenders' were received for carting out
stone ; the tend-rof Messrs. Regan & Kdwards
being the lowest was aceppted.
A letter was received from the Secretary of
the Municipal Association giving the i-olicitor's
opinion reeardinv stopcock^ an to the liability
of Corporations in ea^e of accident. The con
sideration of the letter was held over till the
next meeting.
The proper nee of 'shall' and 'will'
bothers a. good many writers, but the hen
pecked husband understand* the secret of it.
