THE BURNING BARQUE.
FLAMES OVERCOME.
Sydnev, May 25.
The fare on tho four-masted barque
Port Jackson, which broke out late last
night, was subdued by the strenuous
efforts of the fire brigades this morning.
but not until immense volumes of water
had heen pumped into the vessel's hold,
thereby deepening her draught to
such an extent that her keel touched
the bottom. Now that the fire
has been subdued the operation
of puir.ping her out is being
proceeded with. The cause of the fire
is a complete mystery. The cargo is in
sured in no fewer than sixteen different
insurance offices, but the amounts held
by each Company are not known. The
cargo in the lower hold, consisting of tar,
sulphur, &c, has been damaged by fire
and water. The contents between decks
have been injured by the heat and
water, and the decks have been damaged
through having to be cut away during the
progress of the fire. Ten brigades were
at work. ?
