LONG DRY SPELL.
.Thc president of the Glaziers' As-
sociation says that unless rain falls
soon thc position of many pastoralists
will bo very bad, and that in any case
a falling- off in the annual wool clip
and wheat crop is unavoidable.
Broken Hill is bel ng as badly hit as
probably an/ other part of the State,
its total rainfall for the last twelve
months being only 466 points.

"PRO-RATIONING."
A great many people, know from per-
sonal and unwanted experience what
is meant by rationing. A new form
of the word has made its appearance
in the United States, where '"pro
rationing," as limitation of produc-
tion, is termed, has practically put a
stop to .new oil drilling operations.
Apparently it is a contraction .of
"production-rationing," but no more
to be desired in the short form than in
the longer.

CANEFIELDS TROUBLES.
There has been some trouble on the
Queensland canefields of late years
over, the employment of Italian cut-
ters, and the A.W.U. has put up a
tight fir preference to Australians
or men of British birth. A new
phase of the trouble has now crop-
ped up Iii'one of :the sugar areas over
the employment of Hindu cutters and
field laborers, according to a messnge
in a leading Sydnev newspaper. But
if these men are Hindus, and there
fore no doubt British subjects, it is
hard to see how exception can be
taken to them other than on the score
of their color.
