S.A. Rail Men To
Protest
Meetings of railway
metal trades employes
were arranged yesterday
to Drotest aeainst the
decision of Conciliation
Commissioner L. P. Austin
rejecting their claims for in
creased margins.
The meetings were
arranged at a meeting of the
executive of the Metal Trades
Federation in SA and rep
resentatives of the Austra
lian Railways Union.
The. meetings will be held
at the Mile End running
shed on April 21; Tailem
Bend on April 22; Islington
railway workshops on April
23, and Peterborough on
Aprir 28. Another meeting
will be held at Port Linpoln
on a date to be fixed.
The State executive of the
Australasian. Society of En
gineers decided last night to
refer the matter to the
Trades and Labor Council
'for speedy and decisive ac
tion.'
The union's secretary (Mr.
A. B. Thompson) said the
executive realised the need
for co-ordinated action by
all unions affected by Mr.
Austin's decision.
A special general meeting
of the ASE would be held on
Monday night to discuss the
position.
The secretary of the Ade
laide branch of the Federated
Ironworkers' Association
(Mr. R. J. Husdell) said last
night that the association
had passed a resolution de
ploring Conciliation Com
missioner Austin's refusal to
grant marginal increases,
and offering its full support
in the 'fight to have the ano
maly rectified.'
Railwaymen at Peterbor
ough have withheld a threat
to stop work, pending the
outcome of 'an investigation
into their grievances next
week.
Members of the Australian
Railways union and the
Australian Federated Union
of Locomotive Enginemen at
Peterborough had threatened
to stop because of their, dis
satisfaction with conditions
in the single men's hostel.
It was announced yester
day that a railways depart
mental officer and represent
atives of the two unions
would inspect the hostel next
week.
