BRAWL GAME. —
Light relief en an other
wise sombre landscape at
the football final on
Saturday was provided by
a boundary umpire whose
handkerchief waving was
unseen by Umpire Apiin
and who had to chase the
umpire almost into mid
field before tapping him
on the back. I thought he
was going to report
him!
With a regrettable fre
quency of 'incidents',
press photographers, as
Vic Richardson said yes
terday morning, had to
be as well trained as the
plpyers to keep up with
them.
It's not very often,
as sportmen, that we
get contrasted with the
Russians who, says 'Atticus*
in the 'Sunday Times',
could scarcely be called a
sport-loving nation. There
is not, for example, a single
golf course in the whole
USSR.
Australia, he adds, lies at
the very opposite pole in
the world of sport. He then
cites our sporting triumphs
this year— three world
champions in athletics, one
in swimming, wins in the
British open and amateur
golf championships, the
Empire tournament and the
World Canada Cup, and the
men's doubles at Wimble
don.
To that list must now be
added Peter Thomson's
success on Saturday in the
British professional match
play championship.

BLUE.— Oscar for a
shaggy king story goes to
a Grange reader. It con
cerns a fellow ex-Cantab
son of a peasant A Cam

was, for some reason, at
tending a course of lec

Stuarts. He found him
self immensely interested
— so much so that when
it came to the execution
of Charles I, he fainted
away. Right up to the
last, he had thought the
King would got off I \

Tip from the RAA on
this new 79 octane
petrol :—
If your car is a model
later than 1934, have the
ignition timing reset. The
adjustment should be done
by an expert but is not ex
pensive. Motorists are ad
vised to have a general ig
nition tune-up at the same
time.
Pure coincidence, of
course, but seen parsed in
King William street yester
day was a Victorian car,
bearing the number: 'GAS
—079.'

And then there was the

Seldom has St.
Peter's. College been so
well represented on the
local council as at present
— but there's one catch.
The Mayor (Dr. L. L.
Davey) went to Princes.
Latest recruit from St.
Peter's College to St
Peters Council is Mr. E. C.
Phillipson, elected to fill
an extraordinary vacancy,
bringing total council mem
bers from that school to
four.

DRY NOTE. — How
ironical can you get!
Within a day or so of
the announcement of an
increase in water rates,
all water was cut off for
a couple of hours in
northern suburbs on Fri
day evening. Folks not
owning a fresh water
tank just had to prepare
their evening meal water
less.

POSTSCRIPT.— A Wai
kervillager had some French
jriends in to lea and his
small child was invited to
display, her prowess on the
piano. A scries of appalling
discords was at last silenced.
'What on earth was thatt'
asked Poppa.
'Baa, baa, black sheep.'
'It didn't sound like it.'
'I was playing it in
French.'
