LABOUR HUNT.
OCCUPIED ZONES COMBED.
Rough Methods in Belgium.
LONDON, Jan 28.— Reports
reaching Belgian official circles in
London confirm that during the last
few weeks the German occupation
authorities in Belgium have con-
tinued the requisitioning and whole-
sale deportation of Belgians to Ger-
many without regard for juridical
or moral considerations. Men and
women are arrested in the streets
and public places or dragged merci-
lessly from their homes, crammed
into trains like slaves and trans-
ported to Germany where they are
forced to work hard under unsafe
conditions and often under threat of
worse cruelties.
"The exact number of Belgians
thus deported is not known," says
an official Belgian report, "but from
information available must be very
considerable. The recent arrival in
Belgium of the gaulletier Herr
Saukel, employed by Hitler in his
hunt for labour, and the speech de-
livered by him in the Belgian Par-
liament are proof that the Nazi
leaders are determined to shrink
from no iniquity or savagery."
Other reports from Norway say
that the Quisling party is about to
launch a drive to enrol all Norweg-
ian children into youth service.
Parents who refuse to register their
children for this service will be im-
prisoned. Children will have to sign
a declaration saying: "I understand
that from now on I am obliged to
obey my leaders and I must follow
them and the rules given me for
duty in youth service."
"War's Grimmest Stage."
"National morale demands that
every German man from 16 to 65
and every woman from 17 to 45 shall
compulsorily be mobilised for war
service or war work," says the Ger-
man Minister for Propaganda (Dr
Goebbels) in "Das Reich," adding:
"The war has entered its grimmest
stage and measures about to be
taken will delve deeply into German
family life."
