CARGO PILLAGING.
p
HEAVY LOSS IN SYDNEY.
"Biggest Criminal Racket."
SYDNEY, Sept 28.-Shipping com
panies in Sydney say they expect a
loss of hundreds of thousands of
pounds this year through cargo
pillaging on the waterfront despite
the vigilance of police, wharf watch
men and patrolmen.
Cargo pillaging is now considered
the biggest criminal "racket" in
Sydney. Many of the goods stolen
are believed to be flowing to black
markets. Police believe that no effec
tive steps can be taken to reduce the
robberies until the number of police
on this duty is increased and they
are given wider powers.
Since the introduction of rationing
the wide range of goods which dis
appear from the wharves has in
creased. Special police have been
detailed to watch for the operators.
They operate with watchmen and
patrols who are constantly on the
move but they have many miles of
waterfront to watch and the water
front is busier than ever before.
Every inch of space is used 24 hours
a day.
The considerable increase in the
number of wharf labourers since the
war began also added to their diffi
culties in the last few months. Many
men have been convicted of theft and
property worth hundreds of pounds
has been recovered.
