IN PARLIAMENT.
Few Interruptions.
CANBERRA, Sept 2.-Mr Chifley
read his Budget Speech with little
interruption. When he said that
some people thought the war should
be financed entirely by central bank
credit but the Government was con
vinced that in that way lay grave
danger, Mr Harrison (UAP, NSW)
interjected: "At last you have seen
the light."
References to the Government's
plan to establish a mortgage bank
brought "hear hears" from the Gov
ernment side and there were general
expressions of approval for the plans
to deal more harshly with black
marketeers and also for post-war re
construction proposals.
When Mr Chifley alluded to steps
calculated to ensure freedom from
want MaJ Cameron (UAP, SA)
aimed a sly dig at Mr Ward (Lab
our Minister) by adding: "And free
dom to send telegrams to yourself"
-a reference to the telegram alleg
edly sent by Mr Curtin to a recent
rrlly by Mr Ward in his East Sydney
electorate.
Replying to an interjection by Mr
Spender (UAP, NSW) Mr Chifley
said the Government hoped to raise
"something like £200,000,000" by
ordinary loans during the financial
year. The speech took 63 minutes
to deliver.
The Budget debate will be con
tinued on September 10.
The Budget Speech was read in
the Senate by the Customs Minister
(Senator Keane). The debate was
adjourned till September 10.
