MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS.
Improved Procedure.
SYDNEY, Aug 4.--"Action has
been taken to avoid unnecessary loss
of working time incurred by many
persons who may be called up by
the Army for area medical examina
tions," the Director-General of Man
power (Mr Wurth) said on Satur
day. It was difficult he added, in view
of the demands on their services,
for medical officers to be available
at times most suitable for the ex
aminations and for that reason cer
tain obvious improvements in the
present system could not be given
effect to.
Mr. Worth said that it had been
decided to remove the grounds for
complaint regarding the time taken
for examination by implementing
the following plans: Limiting the re
examination of men previously clas
sifed as medically unfit to those
who were not classified as being in
reserved occupations or in protected
undertakings; conducting the ex
aminations wherever possible at the
works of employees at munition fac
tories; excluding from the call-up
for examination all personnel who
had been discharged from the AlP
as permanently medically unfit; the
times for reporting for examination
to be spaced to ensure a minimum
period of waiting at the place of
examination; issuing to each man
on the completion of his interview
a notice to hand to his employer
setting out the time at which he
reported for and the time he left
the place of examination. Instruc
tions had been forwarded to all
National Service officers and they
were asked to co-operate with mili
tary area officers in seeing that
they were carried out.
