SYNTHETIC RUBBER
USA Agreement Denied.
WASHINGTON, Aug 3.-Mr
Arthur Pew, vice-president of the
Houdry Process Corporation, has de
nied a story published in the New
York "Daily News" alleging that the
War Production Board had author
ised his firm to manufacture
600,000 tons of synthetic rubber and
added: "We have continued to seek
such a contract, but thus far have
been unsuccessfuL"
[A Washington message on Sun
day said that an agreement had been
made with Mr Eugene Houdry for
the production of 600,000 tons of
buna synthetic rubber in the next
year. Mr Houdry claimed that he
could produce this vast amount with
out using large supplies of vital
materials such as steel and copper,
since butadiene, the basic material
for buna rubber, was obtainable
from petroleum in existing natural
gas plants, many of which were now
idle in south-western States.]
