CRICKET.
QUEENSLAND MAKES 336.
Determined Innings by G. Cook.
BRISBANE, Jan. 20.-As a result of a
fine innings for 92 by R. Rogers and a
painstaking effort for 117 In 5j hours by
G. Cook today, Queensland is in a favour
able position with 336 runs in its first
innings against Victoria, which has lost
one wicket for 26. Play began on the
Brisbane ground on Saturday but when
Queensland had made 59 without loss a
storm caused the abandonment of play
for the day.
Cook batted until 5 o'clock today, when
the score was over 300. Cook's imper
turbability was a valuable asset to the
side, as the tide turned against Queens
land after lunch, Brown, Watt, J. Barnes
and Bendixon being dismissed for the ad
dition of 42 runs. By afternoon tea the
Victorians were in a good position, hav
ing taken seven wickets for 246--after
an opening stand worth 117-but Cook
and Raymer carried the total to 309 be
fore the next wicket fell. Raymer played
very confidently.
D. Tailon was never comfortable and
after a scratchy start spooned a ball
over the wicket-keeper's head for an easy
[atch. Brown batted 46 minutes but did
not settle down. Raymer gave his best
display to date, suggesting that he has
possibilities as a first-class batsman. The
Victorian fielding early was of a high
standard, but steadily fell away. Johnson
stood out in the bowling, always keep
ing the batsmen watchful The new fast
bowler, Dudley, did well on an unrespon
sive pitch.
Victoria opened its innings at 5.35.
Ellis, with his fourth ball, had Lee caught
by Cook at first slip. Tamblyn and
Harvey played out time.
The attendance was 1,619 and the gate
takings £100.
