CYCLING.
Ex-Champion Dies.

Martin, one of the world's leading
cyclists of 40 to 50 years ago, died
at the Perth Hospital on Saturday
at the age of 81 years. Born at Maine
in the United States,.in 1860, Mar
tin took up competitive cycling when
28 years of age and from about 1890
until 1904 was regarded as one of
the most outstanding performers in
the world. His ability was shown
principally in the sprinting events
but his fame spread throughout the
cycling world because of his un
aoubted strength.
He won the six-day cycling cham
pionship of the world in 1890. In
Australia his major victory was the
famous Austral Wheelrace, won in
Melbougne before a crowd of at least
40,000 people in 1901. Martin was
equally at home on the road and
track and is well remembered by
early-day champions who faced this
rigorous rider on the goldfields.
