SWIMMING POOL FOR
HENLEY BEACH
Work To Be Begun Today
A start will be made this morning
on the construction of the Henley
swimming pool. When it is completed
South Australia will have one of the
most up-to-date baths in the Common
wealth.
It is expected that the baths will be
completed in 10 weeks' time.
The directors of Glenelg Swimming
Pools, Ltd, signed the contract with
the builders. Flicker Bros, on Friday
night.
The pool, which wall comply with
Olympic standard requirements, will be
of reinforced concrete, 165 ft. long by
60 ft. wide. Three-quarters of the pool
will be comparatively safe for non
swimmers, as the depth ranges from 2
ft. 6 in. to 5 ft. 6 in. There will be 12
ft. of water underneath the 30-ft. diving
tower. For carnivals, the levels can be
raised a foot, so that the minimum
depth for swimming races will be 3 ft.
6 in. The pool will hold 300,000 gallons.
It will be surrounded by a sloped
promenade, and there will be accommo
dation for between 3,000 and 4,000 spec
tators There will be a 30-ft. tower
for Olympic high diving, springboards,
and water shoots.
Mr. F. H. Taylor, one of the direc
tors, said on Saturday that the lighting
would be a feature. There would be
overhead electric lights, and a special
under-water system of illumination
through portholes in the sides of the
baths. The water would be continu
ally circulated from the sea by means
of electric pumps, strained, and slightly
warmed in cool weather. Private bath
rooms, where hot sea water baths
might be taken, would be open through
out the year. An open-air cafe and
cabaret would be available.
The new pool, he said, would be on
the site of the present bathing rooms
south of the .ietty, and additions would
be made to the present buildings to
provide a facade facing ttie esplanade.
