CYCLING
A. Priestley Honoured
MERREDIN, Sept. 30.-The Mer
redin cycle club tendered a compli
mentary social to Its member, A.
Priestley, winner of the Beverley-to
Perth race, at a well attended func
tion on Saturday night. A number
of prominent citizens, including Mr.
A. J. Hart, chairman of the Merre
din Rdad Board, were present.
In proposing the toast of the
guest, Mr. Hart, himself an old
cyclist and a competitor in the Bev
erley to Perth in 1907, said that
Priestley showed the form of a
champion cyclist, and he hoped that
the fine race ridden by Priestley
would be an inspiration to the many
young members of the Merredin
club.
It was announced by the chairman
(Mr. Bert Smith) that the nomina
tion of Priestley for the Warrnam
bool-to-Melbourne race had been for
warded. An appeal for funds to
enable the club to send Priestley
to Warrnambool resulted in an
opening subscription of £10 from the
Merredin club through its president
(Mr. H. G. Couchman).
MURCHISON ASSOCIATION.
On Saturday a 25-mile road race was
held by the Murchlson Association'
through Mt. Magnet under the auspices
of the W.A. League of Wheelmen. There
were 16 starters from Meekatharra. Birr
Bell and Mt. Magnet. The race resulted:
R. Cross (7min.), 1; R. Burrows (6mln.).i
2; t. Webster (30sec.). 3. All three'
riders are from Mt. Magnet. Fastest time
w?as gained by R. Steele. of Meekatharra.i
On Sunday a 50-mile road race over
the same course (eight laps of 63/4
miles) was held with the following re
sult: Rit. Moses (13rin.), 1; J. Farrell
(2min.), 2; J. Harris (Ilmin.. 3. Fastest
I time was gained by J. Farrell. All place
getters in this race were Mt. Magnet
riders.
The next inter-town races will be con
ducted at Big Bell on October 1.2.
