IENEMY'S CENTRAL DRIVE.
Burma Border Failure.
NEW YORK, Nov 18.--The As
sociated Press reports from Chung
king that the Chinese have an
nounced unabated fighting on the
central China front, with heavy
casualties on both sides. The Chin
ese repulsed a Japanese counter-at-I
tack north-east of Yochow (Hunan
Province).
The United Press reports 'rom
Chungking that, penetrating deeper
into Hunan Province, Japanese
forces crossing the Li river, west of
Lake Tungting, pushed 30 miles
west towards Changteh.
Tokio official radio claims that
the offensive commenced on Nov-:

Lake is progressing satisfactorily. It
asserts that results up to Wednes
day were 5,678 enemy dead and
1,952 prisoners. The Japanese also
captured 22 artillery pieces and
1,033 rifles and machineguns. The;
