PRINMNG OF BOOKS.
Tradesmen to be Retained.
sYDNE?, Aug 4.-- the iCovern
ment is providing fattes in Aus
tralia for the printing of books, par
ticularly those of a scientific, tech=
nical, educational and Informative
nature, the Director-Ge feral of
Manpower (Mr Wurth) has issued
Instructions to all deput?-directors
general that at present skilled
printing tradesmen in classes 4 and
5 are not to be diverted to other
occupations. Care and discrimina
tion are to be exercised in choosing
the establishments from which any
remaining skilled tradesmen in
classes 1, 2 and 3 are withdrawn
while the practicability of trans
ferring skiled .men within industry
to obtain the most effective use of
labour available is under consider
tion.
Mr Wurth pointed out that no
good purpose would be served by im
porting quantities of suitable paper
for the printing of books unless
there was skilled manpower avail
able to print the books.
