GAS PRODUCERS.
Prosecution Under Regulations.
The first prosecution in this State
under the National Security (Gas
Producer) Regulations was heard
before Mr W. J. Wallwork, SM, in
the Perth Police Court yesterday,
when Raymond Firth was charged
with having caused a gas producer
to be fitted to his motor car without
a permit under the regulations, and
knowingly given false information to
the Liquid Fuel Control Board in
respect to an application for author
ity to fit a gas producer. The regu
lations came into force in January,
1942. Mr Norman Good prosecuted
on behalf of the Liquid Fuel Control
Board, and Mr S. E. Tippett ap
peared for the defendant.
An officer of the Liquid Fuel Con
trol Board- said that a permit was
issued to the defendant on October
1, 1942, to fit a gas producer of
his own make to his car. In the
meantime it was discovered that
Firth had made a false statement
in his application to the board on
September 30. The defendant had
stated that he needed the gas pro
ducer for the purpose of taking his
mates to work at the State Imple
ment Works, where, he said, he was
employed as a machinist. Actually
Firth was not employed there at
all. As a consequence authority for
the fitting of the gas producer was
revoked on October 2. The defend
ant had applied to the Police Traffic
Branch for a taxi, but was refused.
Later, it was found that defendant's
car was being fitted with a new gas
producer, which he had purchased
from a city firm. The gas producer
was subsequently dismantled under
instructions from the Liquid Fuel
Control Board.
Imposing a fine of- £5 on each
charge with a total of £2/8/ costs,
the Magistrate said: "'irth abso
lutely defied the authorities in fit
ting a gas producer to his car. These
gas producers are controlled and it
is a part of the war effort to save
petrol. This mnan tried to deceive
the department."
