PRICE OF SUPERPHOSPHATE.
'Increases from Yesterday.
CANBERRA. July 1.-After a compre
hensive investigation the Commonwealth
Prices Commissiner (Professor Cop
land) has permitted superphosphate
manufacturers to raise their prices.
Prices will be increased from July 1 by
the following amounts:-Western Aus
tralia, £1 a ton; E5re Peninsula (South
Australia), £1 a ton; N.S.W., Victoria,
and South Australia other than Eyre
Peninsula, 18/ a ton: Tasmania, 13/ a
ton.
Higher freight on phosphate rock im
ported from Nauru and Ocean Island
was the chief reason for the increases,
said Professor Copland. It had risen 21/9
a ton since the last revision of super
phosphate prices, on January 1. There
had also been an increase of ninepence
a ton in the cost of phosphate rock. The
position would be reviewed before the end
of the year, Professor Copland added,
but with shipping difficulties and the In
creased costs of ingredients it was by no
means certain thbat the prices now per
mitted could be maintained. However,
the position would be kept under con
stant review and any relief that might
come from declining costs would be im
mediately passed on to the consumer.
He explained that the steeper increase
allowed for Western Australia and Eyre
Peninsula was due largely to the depen
dence of manufacturers in those parts
upon imported brimstone for sulphuric
acid.
