MELBOURNE SHOW.
Record Attendance on Saturday.
MELBOURNE, Sept. 25.-A record
crowd of more than 80,000 persons at
tended the Royal Show yesterday. Fav
oured, so far, by glorious spring weather,
attendances for the first three days have
been more than three times as great as
those last year. The effect of the league
football final, which also drew a record
crowd, was scarcely noticed. Mild weather
again attracted throngs to the night
events. Exhibitors and sideshow people
did a roaring trade and were delighted
with the freedom with which the crowd
spent its money.
All previous attendance records for days
other than the official show holiday were
shattered when 56,483 attended during the
day, compared with 25,935 last year. At
night a further 25,121 persons visited the
show grounds.
The most representative gathering
which has ever assembled in the official
luncheon room was present at the Com
monwealth luncheon yesterday. The key
note of the speeches of the Attorney
General (Mr. Menzies) and the Minister
for Trade and Customs (Mr. White) was
the great importance of the primary in
dustries to Australia. They pointed out
the supreme importance to these Indus-]
tries and to every producer that markets
should be expanded and peace be main
tained.
