INFANT HEALTH,
State-wide Appeal.
DURING the next few weeks, a State
wide appeal for funds will be held by
the Infant Health Association, the money
accruing from the drive to be devoted
to an increase in the association's activi
ties, as well as the carrying out of pre
sent work.
An endeavour is being made by the
organisers of the appeal to get in touch
with and enlist the help of all sections
of the community and various functions
(details of which will be announced later)
have been arranged. In order that those
who cannot give public assistance may
help the cause, it has been suggested
that a "snowball" bridge drive be held
ie., bridge parties are arranged in pri
vate homes and a subscription of 2/ col
lected from each guest. Those present
are then invited to arrange other bridge
parties and so on.
The work of the health centres con
sists in educating and helping a mother
in the care of her child, and in the
comparatively few years they have been
in existence, the centres have been suc
cessful in reducing the death rate among
babies under one year of age from 10
per 1,000 to less than four per 1,000
The sickness rate has also decreased.
The association would like it to be
understood that it gets no maintenance
for the centres from either the hospital
fund tax or the motherhood pppeal funds.
The main bulk of the money needed is
raised by private subscription, with the
help of a Government subsidy, and as
sistance from the local road boards and
other sources.
