MELBOURNE TRIALS.
RONOLIVE GOES WELL.
Good Mile by Dark David.
MELBOURNE, March 23.-Anne (W.
Little), the speedy Sydney two-year-old,
again showed great pace on the Caulfield
steeplechase grass today, running halt
a mile in 49sec. Anne broke 37sec. for
the first three furlongs, but a strong
easterly wind favoured her. Going on the
outside of Academy (R. Green) she had
the better of the finish. Happy Dinah
(H. Mornement) covered half a mile on
the steeplechase grass in 491sec. Hostile
(H. Mornement) also did a good half
mile, recording 50sec. Bellevue (N. Var
ley) ran half a mile in 501sec. on the
sand. King's square (H. Morris) and
Hunting Chorus (T. Northover) were
companions for a pleasing five furlongs
in 1.3 on the steeplechase grass.
National (R. Bailey), on the outside of
Yeoford (H. Ryder), did well to cover
five furlongs in 1.31 on the steeplechase
grass. Barametric (H. Morris) put past
seven furlongs on the steeplechase grass
in 1.32-, and finished well over the last
six furlongs in 1.181. Prairie Moon (P.
Mushchialli) and Peggy O'Neil (S. Mar
tin) strode off from the mile on the
steeplechase grass. They were at even
time early but, by running the last six
furlongs in 1.181, they completed the mile
in 1.471. Stratheden (R. Bailey) and
Romulus (W. Elliot) showed a nice turn
of speed by keeping together over half
a mile in 50sec. on the steeplechase
grass. Dinara (L. Dixon) kept wide on
the sand for a mile in 1.491.
Nothing went better on the Fleming
ton tan than Ronolive (D. Elliot). Gal
loping on the outside she defeated High
Commissioner (L. Whittle) over three
furlongs in 38sec. Swarthy (R. Wardle)
and Guerdon (L. Whittle) pleased over
four furlongs in 51&sec. The Sydney
visitor, Hash (Burgoine) did exception
ally well to dispose of six furlongs in
1.18. Astronomer (S.. Burgoine) and
Monologue (E. Silver) put past a mile in
1.48, a distance that Pebblestone (F.
Woodhouse) covered in 1.481. In Arms
(F. Woodhouse), assisted by Bulka, got
to the end of a mile and a quarter in
2.18. Caeira (R. Evans) sprinted three
furlongs in 38sec. on the course proper.
Carpentier (E. Preston) and Donor's Hill
(V. Hartney) kept together over half a
mile in 51sec. Border Lass (J. Burke)
and Harina (S. Burgoine) disposed of
five furlongs in 1.41. Capain Kettle (R.
Evans) and Hautboy (J. Burke) tra
versed six furlongs in 1.21, and con
cluded their last two furlongs in 26sec.
Dignitary (S. Burgoine) proved equal to
running a mile and a quarter in 2.19. be
ing assisted by W. Burke's Friarsdale
gelding over the last six in 1.27.
Sir BegeIt impresses.
Moonee Valley candidates to attract
attention in their gallops at Epsom in
cluded Sir Regent, Glenfino, Frill Prince,
Blanca and Dark David. Sir Regent (A.
Dewhurst) ran a mile in 1.461. Sir Rona
(J. Crilley) jumped off two lengths In
frdnt of Sir Regent as be approached
the five-furlong post, but the latter, fin
ishing strongly, made up his ground well
and finished on terms with the watch
showing 1.4j for the five furlongs. Glen
fino (H. Toomer), accompanied by Prince
Sardis (H. Coffey), revealed a nice turn
of speed to run three furlongs in 37sec.
next to the rails. Frill Prince (F. Munro)
was bracketed with Blanca (S. Smith)
for nine furlongs next to the rails. The
pair began steadily, but on approaching
the six-furlong post they begah to stretch
out in earnest and they ran from their
home in 1.18j. The nine furlongs occu
pied 2.21. Bianca, who had a big ad
vantage in weight, was half a length in
front at the finish. Dark David (G. Mc
Cormick) defeated Orlando (F. Bine
ham) by two lengths over a mile in 1.48.
The best sprint of the morning at
Mentone was done by th promising
maiden performer, Ajon, who carried
the lightweight R. Hayes over three fur
longs in the smart time of S88sec.
Irving (C. Thorpe) and Fancifort (D.
Lovekin) easily disposed of three fir
longs in l9isec.
